E-Activity and Leading Technologies 2007: Keynote speakers

CÂMARA, António

António Câmara is CEO of YDreams and Professor at the New University of Lisbon. He has a PhD from Virginia Tech and was a Post-Doc at MIT. António Câmara has been a Visiting Professor at both Cornell University (1988-89) and MIT (1998-99).

He is the author of Environmental Systems, A Multidimensional Approach published by Oxford University Press and more than seventy refereed papers. António Câmara was Senior Adviser of the National Geographic Information System project (the first spatial data infrastructure available in the Internet) and Senior Consultant of Expo98 (the World Fair held in Lisbon).

In June 2000, he co-founded YDreams, one of the most innovative mobile software companies in the world with work featured on the New York Times, Business Week, El Pais, Liberation, Guardian, and Wired among other media outlets.

GROUT, Vic

Vic Grout was awarded the BSc(Hons) degree in Mathematics and Computing from the University of Exeter (UK) in 1984 and the PhD degree in Communication Engineering ("Optimisation Techniques for Telecommunication Networks") from Plymouth Polytechnic, now the University of Plymouth, (UK) in 1988.

He has worked in senior positions in both academia and industry for twenty years and has published and presented over 120 research papers. He is currently a Reader in Computer Science at the University of Wales NEWI, Wrexham in the UK, where he leads the Centre for Applied Internet Research (CAIR). His research interests and those of his research students span several areas of computational mathematics, particularly the application of heuristic principles to large-scale problems in network design and management.

Dr. Grout is a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Scientist, Chartered Mathematician and Chartered IT Professional, a member of the ACM, IEEE Computer and Communications Societies, a senior member of IEEE and a Fellow of the British Computer Society (BCS) and Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). He chairs the biennial international conference series on Internet Technologies and Applications (ITA 05 and ITA 07).

GURALNICK, David

David Guralnick holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Northwestern University, where his work synthesized concepts from the fields of computer science, instructional design, and cognitive psychology.

Over the past fifteen years, he has designed and developed simulation-based training applications, electronic performance-support systems, and specialized authoring tools, which allow non-technical people, such as writers and trainers, to build e-learning sites. The cornerstone of David’s design philosophy is the concept of content-driven, goal-driven design using the information and the needs of the end-users, rather than the technology, to lead the design process.

Dr. Guralnick is president of New York-based Kaleidoscope Learning, chair of ASTD-New York's E-learning Special Interest Group, a regular speaker at international conferences, chair of the International Conference on E-Learning, host of the e-learning talk show "Truth in E-Learning", and an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University.
